I came across !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! yesterday proposing that this meme is a way to get people to volunteer data for facial recognition algorithms. It’s worth a read. Regardless of what you think about the article, and I think it’s just an entertaining read, I remain in the camp that says it’s best to avoid putting any more data about yourself out into the ether than necessary.

If Facebook really wanted to all they’d have to do is look back at profile picture 2009 and picture 2019 . They already have more data than they need, especially since they have the auto tag or suggested tag feature.

tl;dr - don’t Facebook.

When Google Glass was a thing, that app that scanned faces and gave you data on the person in your heads up display... Oh man. Coolest thing ever. Massive invasion of privacy? Sure. But.... It doesn't get much more sci-fi than that. I want to look at someone and instantly know the cars they own

Why wouldn’t they use all the harvested data in their servers? Seems like a silly idea given pictures aren’t going to have the same angle.

Yeah, I want that feature, though I get why people would be weirded out by it. But that’s not why most people were bothered about G lass, it seemed like people didn’t like that it had a camera (despite the fact that every phone has one).

Did it actually work? Where was the point of service for the data?
![]() 01/18/2019 at 16:03 |

Yes, but it was removed due to the massive backlash.

The article mentions that. But it also runs with the idea that profile pics are a heterogenous and scattered data set with ambiguous ages attached. This meme would get you two pics identified by person, exactly 10 years apart and presented in an easily mineable fashion.

how much of a bad idea would it be to invest in some real climbing equipment so that I could “safely” climb a tree to remove some rather large branches hanging over my house. the thought is that I could safely get to places that I normally couldn’ t otherwise and with rope s and pulli es cut down the branches and lower then to the ground without putting new skylights in my house.

Wish we had a world where we could be sure our data wasn’t misused.

Sure, every phone has a camera, but that camera is not on your face constantly recording whats going on around you. Plus it is usually pretty obvious when someone whips out their phone to take a picture which gives you the option of asking them not to take your picture, or moving away from where they’re taking a picture.

I t’ s not a great plan. I have all the gear necessary and the skills to put them to use and i’ve tried it with little success. You will have a hard time rigging the line so that it will be useful and outside of specialized descending devices with auto- braking you still have to manually lock off...and it only prevents you from falling not whacking your body into the bulk of the tree. It’ s certainly a good idea to use ropes as fall protection, but I’ve found its not very practical.
You should look into tree climbing gear specifically, such as logging spikes and straps. They would probably be more useful and safe...or just rent a cherry picker.

The article proposes that this meme provides a ready and identifiable data set with a reliable 10 year period between photos. The article explains it in detail. I’m not saying it’s a real thing, just that it’s interesting.

There’s a big difference between a camera that’s in your pocket most of the time vs a camera that makes it so I literally cannot interact with you in person without having it pointed at me the whole time.

True, though it did have a light to show when it was “recording”.

When I used FB, my profile pic was often not my face.

I suspect it is not as obvious as you think. And glass did show when it was recording.

They have a lot of data, but less of an idea of what it is. These pics, they have a very good idea of what it is. The hard part of making good data is having good labels.

I do have an account, though it’s been a couple of years since I posted anything on there.
I keep thinking about deleting it entirely, but never bother.

It’s harder to delete a Facebook account (for real) than it is to cancel your cable. I have a page too, but I never sign on. I just used it once to find an old friend.
![]() 01/18/2019 at 16:16 |

Yeah, and I know damn well that they won’t delete whatever data they have on my anyways, so I don’t bother - I just try not to add to it.

I don’t.
People I want to talk to are either here, or they have my number. If giving me a call or shooting me a message is too much for them, I probably didn’t want to talk to them anyway.
I’d rather have a few great/close friends than have 700 FB ( read fake ) friends.

So much this. I do not have Facebook, and I don’t Twit. You hear so many stories about awful things dug out of people’s FB past. Guess what--if you don’t have FB, then you don’t have to worry.

I’ve seen a study somewhere that basically said people on Facebook are less happy than those who aren’t. It makes perfect sense to me.
![]() 01/18/2019 at 17:15 |

The article may be correct, but think they’ve already got pretty damn good aging algorithms. For example, I have a google photos account, and they have algorithms that try to organize your photos for you. They predict which faces are the same people, then ask you if it’s the same person. I have some historical family photos on there, and it could tell which ones were my great grandfather over an 80 year period using photos from WWI into the 90s (he lived to 102). It could also tell who my grandmother ones from the time she was a teen into her 80s.
However, it thought my wife and SIL were the same person.

That, or don’t say/do awful things, I suppose.

No, but they seem happy in their obliviousness.
![]() 01/18/2019 at 18:16 |

Yeah, but without knowing who did and didn’t, the data is much less useful. The hard part of getting good data for machine learning is having good, accurate labels.

Massive invasion of privacy?
O nly if non-public data was used. Or if you wore it into places considered private and off-limits to cameras or recording equipment.
